Composites consist of a mixture of a number phases that are bonded together in a matter that makes the average properties of the composite be determined by the individual properties of each phase. This is a great advancement in designing materials for it enables one to gain advantageous characteristics from each of the component materials or to kill disadvantageous characteristics of each. High strength, high wear tool and severe corrosion and high temperature resistance applications are some of the examples.
